Principles of Condensed Matter Physics

Now in paperback, this book provides an overview of the physics of condensed matter systems. Assuming a familiarity with the basics of quantum mechanics and statistical mechanics, the book establishes a general framework for describing condensed phases of matter, based on symmetries and conservation laws. It explores the role of spatial dimensionality and microscopic interactions in determining the nature of phase transitions, as well as discussing the structure and properties of materials with different symmetries. Particular attention is given to critical phenomena and renormalization group methods. The properties of liquids, liquid crystals, quasicrystals, crystalline solids, magnetically ordered systems and amorphous solids are investigated in terms of their symmetry, generalised rigidity, hydrodynamics and topological defect structure. In addition to serving as a course text, this book is an essential reference for students and researchers in physics, applied physics, chemistry, materials science and engineering, who are interested in modern condensed matter physics.

Equations of Mathematical Physics

Mathematical physics plays an important role in the study of many physical processes - hydrodynamics, elasticity, and electrodynamics, to name just a few. Because of the enormous range and variety of problems dealt with by mathematical physics, this thorough advanced-undergraduate or graduate-level text considers only those problems leading to partial differential equations. The authors - two well-known Russian mathematicians - have focused on typical physical processes and the principal types of equations deailing with them. Special attention is paid throughout to mathematical formulation, ri

Methods of Mathematical Physics

This well-known text and reference contains an account of those parts of mathematics that are most frequently needed in physics. As a working rule, it includes methods which have applications in at least two branches of physics. The authors have aimed at a high standard of rigour and have not accepted the often-quoted opinion that 'any argument is good enough if it is intended to be used by scientists'. At the same time, they have not attempted to achieve greater generality than is required for the physical applications: this often leads to considerable simplification of the mathematics. Particular attention is also paid to the conditions under which theorems hold. Examples of the practical use of the methods developed are given in the text: these are taken from a wide range of physics, including dynamics, hydrodynamics, elasticity, electromagnetism, heat conduction, wave motion and quantum theory. Exercises accompany each chapter.

Teaching and Learning Physics in Senior High Schools in Ghana: The Challenges and the Way Forward

Aim: Considering the technological age that we find ourselves in this 21st century, it would be expected that, the number of students willing to study physics will increase exponentially. However, reports indicate a sharp reduction of students in physics classrooms. This study therefore sought to identify the challenges and way forward for improving physics teaching and learning in Senior High Schools in Ghana. Study Design: Descriptive cross-sectional survey was used for the study. Methodology: The main instrument used for the study was questionnaire. The sample size for the study comprised both physics teachers and students. The sample size for the teachers was made up of 38 teachers which comprised 34 males and 4 females who were selected using the convenient sampling approach. The sample size for the students consisted of 750 students selected by stratified sampling of which 520 were males and 230 were females. Results: While the teachers perceived the most important factor affecting the teaching and learning of physics to be students-related problem, the students on the other hand perceived the major challenge affecting the teaching and learning of physics to be teacher-related. For both teachers and students, provision of adequate resources like well-equipped laboratories for teaching and learning is an assured way of improving the teaching and learning of physics in senior high schools in Ghana. Conclusions: The challenges in teaching physics as perceived by both teachers and students are teacher related, student-related and resource-constraints It was recommended that the government must make conscious effort to provide the schools with adequate science resources to facilitate the practical approach to teaching and learning of physics.

Effect of Practical Activities on Students? Skills, Understanding, and Performance in Physics Measurement

This study investigated the effect of practical activities on students? process skills, conceptual understanding, and academic performance in physics measurement. An action research design was employed involving a purposively selected sample of 49 Form Two students. Data were collected using observation checklists, questionnaires, and achievement tests, with reliability confirmed by a Cronbach?s alpha value of 0.960. The intervention consisted of structured practical activities conducted over three weeks. Quantitative data were analysed using descriptive statistics and paired-sample t-test, while qualitative responses were analysed thematically. Results indicated significant improvement in students? conceptual understanding and performance, with mean scores increasing from 13.6 to 29.7. The paired-sample t-test showed statistically significant differences (p < 0.05). The findings suggest that practical activities enhance students? engagement, process skills, and learning outcomes in physics measurement. The study recommends integrating structured practical activities into early physics instruction.
